Firefighters described as to blaze at pet crematory

A dozen firefighters responded to a fire at the Pikes Peak Pet Crematory early Saturday night.

The blaze was noted just previously six p.m. by a employee at the corporation. The employee was making use of a newly put in incinerator and noticed flames on the ceiling in the vicinity of the smokestack, Lt. Jeff Sievers of the Colorado Springs Fire Division says.

"By the time we arrived, he had it pretty noticeably knocked down," Sievers said.

Fire crews utilized power saws to lower by way of the metal roof of the generating at 2523 Durango Drive in southern Colorado Springs. Sievers explained there was fire harm to the roof and the firefighters were checking the area near the smokestack to make positive the blaze did not spread.

Fuel lines main to the incinerator had to be shut off while fire crews investigated. No person was harm in the course of the incident.

Roofing Secrets Revealed

(ARA) - Choosing the right roofing material for your home can be a mystery for many homeowners. With the number of options available, it has become increasingly difficult to choose.

Over the last few years, residential metal roofing has grown significantly in popularity as many homeowners have learned of its durability, while others have focused on the many styles and colors available. However, there is still a greater number who are trying to unravel the clues.

Tom Black, executive director of the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA), answers the most common questions most homeowners have about metal roofing:

Why should a homeowner consider metal roofing?

Metal roofing has many advantages. For example, metal roofs have a lower life cycle cost than most traditional roofing material such as asphalt or cedar and it can withstand severe weather such as hail, snow, high winds as well as fire. It's also available in many styles and colors to fit virtually any home.

What is the overall cost of a metal roof?

Metal roofs can initially cost three to four times more than traditional roofing materials, but homeowners should keep in mind that the typical asphalt or cedar roof requires replacement every 15 years. While asphalt or cedar roofs are initially cheaper, when homeowners consider the cost of a metal roof spread out over a 60-year period, metal is the clear choice.

Do metal roofs come with warranties?

While most premium asphalt roofs will last from 12 to 20 years, metal can last more than 60. That's why you'll find most metal roofing with warranties of about 50 years -- nearly four times more than most other roofing products.

Aren't metal roofs noisy?

Not at all. Metal roofs with solid sheathing and insulation control noise from rain, hail and bad weather just as well as any other roofing material.

How does metal roofing stand up to extreme weather?

Metal roofing is the most durable roofing material available. Whether it's hail, snow, severe winds or even fire, metal roofing protects homeowners from whatever Mother Nature can throw their way. For example, in a hail storm, a metal roof's solid structure prevents dents, dings and other damage hail is known to cause. In fact, homeowners in some areas receive up to a 30 percent reduction in their homeowners insurance for having a metal roof installed.

Will metal roofing help combat the rising cost of energy?

One of the most beneficial aspects of metal roofing is its ability to insulate a home. Not only does metal roofing keep the house comfortable regardless of the weather outside, but it can actually lower air conditioning and heating bills.

Will metal roofing fit with the style of my house and neighborhood?

Definitely! Metal roofing comes in a variety of styles, colors and finishes and is made to look just like other popular types of roofing material including cedar shake, slate, asphalt shingles and clay tiles.

Where can homeowners go for more information on metal roofing?

Homeowners can go to www.metalroofing.com to learn more about metal roofing, view the various styles available and participate in the "Ask the Experts" section.

Solyndra Announces Solar Solution for Fast Growing Commercial Metal Roof Market

Non-penetrating, Fast and Easy Mount System

FREMONT, Calif. -- Solyndra LLC, the leading American manufacturer of lightweight, easy to install cylindrical photovoltaic (PV) systems for commercial rooftops, today announced the Solyndra 200 Series Metal Roof Solution. The unique non-penetrating adjustable mounting system is designed to meet the additional solar installation challenges posed by metal roofs. Metal roofs make up a significant and growing portion of the large, low-sloped, commercial, industrial and agricultural rooftop markets.

Unique adjustable mount allows Solyndra panels to install on all types of metal roofs. (Photo: Business Wire)

“Customers with metal roofs have been excited about the benefits of using our lightweight, non-ballasted and non-penetrating design on metal roofs, but have been in need of a flexible mounting solution to address the wide variety of roof types in the market,” said Brian Harrison, Solyndra’s president and CEO. “Adapted from our proven 200 Series mounting system, the new metal roof mounts require no tools in the assembly process and are adjustable to meet the majority of low-slope metal roof configurations supplied by the industry’s leading metal roof manufacturers.”

The innovative adjustable mount design has no attachments, and uses no tools, allowing Solyndra 200 Series panels to be installed faster than any other standing seam solution on the market today. The mounts are currently available and to date have been installed and tested on metal roofs by ASC Building Products, Bemo USA , Kalzip, Kingston and Gibraltar.

Solyndra’s 200 Series products are ideally suited for metal roofs. The low, 2.8 lbs. per square foot distributed load allows for simple installation without ballast or penetrations in winds up to 130 mph when installed in accordance with Solyndra’s installation guidelines. Attaching conventional racking to metal roofs often damages the metal roof and could compromise the integrity of the roof. While not required, to maximize power from Solyndra’s cylindrical solar modules roof owners can choose white or reflective, “cool roofs” conserving energy and reducing ambient heating caused by rooftops while generating more power. Metal roofs are often employed on temporary or re-locatable buildings and Solyndra’s ease of install and simple relocation makes the panels a good solution where the possibility of relocation exists.

About Solyndra:

Solyndra designs and manufactures solar photovoltaic systems, comprised of panels and mounts, for the large commercial rooftop market. Using proprietary cylindrical modules and thin-film technology, Solyndra systems are lightweight and non-penetrating, and the fastest and easiest to install solar panels for rooftop applications. This allows Solyndra to achieve the lowest system installation costs on a per watt basis for the commercial rooftop market. Solyndra manufactures its rooftop solar panels and unique greenhouse solar system in the United States and is headquartered in Fremont, California. www.solyndra.com

Choosing Which Roofing Material to Use for Your Home

Composite Shingles

Composite shingles are made of asphalt. The base material can be made of organic fibre mat or fibreglass core. With their adhesive backing, composite shingles are easy to install. Nails, staples or tacks are used to attach them to the roof. If you live in an area common to hurricanes and rainstorms, then this roofing material is the choice for you. But make sure to add some roofing cement to secure the roof. Shingles are currently the most popular choice of material for roofs in the US. Roofers find the material easy to install and durable. They could last about 30 to 50 years, given that they are reinforced once in a while. Also, roofing contractors and manufacturers have come up with shingles that are resistant to mold and algae growth, which means longer life for your roof.

You can pair composite shingles with almost any type of gutterfrom galvanized to wooden gutters.

Metal Roofing

No roofing material has as much variety in price and type as metal roofing. It can feature galvanised iron or lead on a low-cost barn, or it can take the form of elegant copper on royal homes and majestic museums. It can easily be installed as sheets or shingles, both of which are suitable for steep roofs. Mechanically seamed metal, on the other hand, is ideal for gentle slopes. Contrary to the natural property of metal, metal roofing does not absorb too much heat, making it very ideal for tropical areas such as Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Lutz. Those who live in places with occasional thunderstorms can feel safe with a roof covered with a metal sheet because of its ability to disperse lightning. It is non-flammable, too. Metal roofing also appeals to home owners because of its low cost and aesthetic appeal, although one usually has to choose from either of these two factors. The more attractive materials are also more expensive. Metal roofing is probably the cheapest roofing material available in the market today. Roofing companies guarantee 50 years of a secure roof for your home if you choose this material.

Tile and Slate Roofing

Roof tiles are usually made of slate, glazed ceramic and baked clay, and they top all the other roofing materials in terms of age and weight. They have been used to cover the tops of houses in ancient eras, much longer than the other types that we have discussed. Two factors discourage people from using tiles and slatesweight and price. Due to their heaviness, roofers must first ensure that your house has stronger roof and wall to support structure. They are also much more expensive than most materials. Traditional homes and mansions usually have slate roofing. If your aim is for the classic look, then this is your choice. Its best features are they are fire-resistant and sturdy, lasting for generations. They withstand snow and hail, moisture and heat. Termites are not able to build a home on these types of roofs. Most noticeably, they are beautiful. Japanese temples have been elaborately topped with tiles, and so have the famous Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore of Florence in Italy and the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

Seamless metal gutters should pair off with slates very well. You will need highly skilled roofers or roofing contractors to properly install this material.

For roofing services, roofing contractors, or general contractors, try Beacon Construction Services. They are a roofing company that services the areas of Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Lutz.

Metal Roofing Provides Great Benefits

Metal roofing last longer, stands up to the elements and is better for the environment. You will find that your new metal roof provides incredible benefits.

Every single day the roof of a building receives the brunt of the elements. Every day it is subjected to one or more of the following: wind, rain, snow and a direct bombardment of UV rays. It stands to reason that the investment you make in your roof protects the entire investment of your home. A metal roof is the surest way to secure the investment you've made in your property because it outperforms any other roofing materials.

In support of this are manufacturers' warranties that are far in excess of anything else ever offered in the industry. Many of our products have a 25 year unconditional warranty on the paint finish alone! Many of our products have a 50 year warranty against defect. In the past, with other roofing options, warranties like this were unheard of!

Gone are the days when your only choices for roofing are asphalt based products that:

Are nothing more than fibrous materials soaked in petrochemicals that pollute our ground water every time it rains.

That require maintenance and even with that will have to be replaced every 12-20 years.

Have to be torn off before re-roofing causing unnecessary costs and wasting limited resources--your money and our planet.

Gone are the days when your only choices for roofing are cement based materials that:

Require extra bracing in your roof members to support their weight.

Break and snap apart when you walk on your roof or when there's a wind storm.

Are expensive and require specialized skills to install.

Metal roofing has none of those disadvantages!

With metal roofing, you can all have all of the benefits and none of the disadvantages of conventional roofing methods. In fact, you'll have more benefits with metal than you will with any other choice!

You should not laugh, just barf..

UNBELIEVABLY, there's another person out there with plenty of cash to buy a Roller - but not plenty of aesthetic judgment to decide a respectable colour scheme.

So relatively than make a firm determination, the bloke had this Phantom painted to seem like a pair of harlequin's trousers, with a purple metal-flake roof, budgerigar yellow flanks, white flashes along the wings and a lipstick red and yellow interior with pink steering wheel.

Oh, and there is certainly a gold-plated grille. Barf at its beauty.

Metal Roofing's Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does a metal roof cost more than a typical roof?

A. Because metal roofing is a premium home product, you can expect your new roof to cost more than what an asphalt shingle roof costs. However, a metal roof is comparable in price to tile roofing or cedar shake roofing. If you currently have a slate roof, you can expect your metal roof to cost less. No matter what kind of metal roofing style you choose, you'll never have to worry about your roof again. Most come with a true 30 to 50 year warranty. Plus, your new metal roof will add to the resale value of your home, save you money on your energy bills, and give you piece of mind that you'll likely never have to re-roof again.

Q. I'm concerned that a metal roof won't match my home and the roofing style in my neighborhood.

A. Today's residential metal roofing is made to look exactly like common roofing material - such as asphalt shingle, cedar shake, clay tile or slate roofing - only stronger and more durable. Click here to see metal roofing's wide variety of styles, colors and patterns - there's certain to be a style and finish to match your home and neighborhood.

Q. Does metal attract lightning?

A. Lightning is attracted to the highest point, not necessarily metal. A metal roof has no greater chance of being hit by lightning than any other type of roof. However, if your roof would be struck by lightning, a metal roof can help prevent your home from catching on fire because it can dissipate the electrical charge. More importantly, it is noncombustible.

Q. Can you walk on the roof?

A. Most metal panel systems can support the load of an individual walking on them. As with any roof system care must be taken to not cause damage to the roof due to abrasion or collapsing of raised portion of the panel. Appropriate OSHA approved safety procedures should also be followed.

Q. How heavy is metal roofing?

A. Metal roof systems in most cases weigh between 1 to 3 pounds per square foot. The actual weight is dependent upon metal gauge and profile of the panel. Metal roof systems are considered a lightweight roof covering compared to their counterparts. The following illustrates the different types of other roofing materials and their respective weights per square foot: Asphalt Shingle: 2 - 3.5lbs psf Textured Asphalt Shingle: 3.5 - 5lbs psf Wood Shingles/Shakes: 3.5 - 4.5lbs psf Clay or Concrete Tile: 5.5 - 10lbs psf

Q. What is the minimum roof slope for metal roofing?

A. Absolute Steel offers a wide variety of panel systems to meet a variety of slope requirements. Information regarding minimum slope requirements can be found on the specific technical Data Sheet for each product. Typically, metal panel systems can be applied to pitches of : 12 or greater. Actual minimum slopes may be dependent upon roof geometry, substrate, and physical location of the project.

Q. How much longer will a metal roof last than common roofing like asphalt or wood shingle?

A. You can expect a metal roof to last at least 2 to 3 times longer than a regular roof. In general terms, count on a metal roof lasting 40 to 60 years and beyond. To put it in context, the average life span of an asphalt roof is 12 to 20 years. That lifespan can be shorter depending on the pitch of your roof and the climate in your area. Made of oil impregnated paper or fiberglass, asphalt begins to deteriorate as soon as you expose it to normal weather. A metal roof, however, will never decompose. Other roofing materials like wood shingle, shake and tile have varying degrees of weather-related problems that lead to breakdown. Wood shingle and shake roofs often need replacement before twenty years. Concrete tile roofs can crack and warp in the freeze/thaw cycle of more northern climates. All of the above roofing materials are well-outlasted by metal roofing, which retains its good looks and durability decade after decade after decade.

Q. Is metal roofing noisier in bad weather than asphalt, cedar shake, tile and slate roofing?

A. This is a common question, and probably one of the biggest misconceptions about metal roofing. People usually think of an old barn roof where the metal is visible to the interior of the structure. On a residence, however, metal roofing is often installed over a solid substrate. Further, attic space and insulation serve as additional sound barriers. Research has proven that metal is not any noisier than traditional roofing products. In fact, youll hear more bad weather noise from your walls and windows than you will from your metal roof.

Q. How will a metal roof stand up to extreme weather?

A. A metal roof can withstand decades of abuse from extreme weather like high winds, heavy snow, hailstorms, and even wildfires. Metal roofing has a 120-mph wind rating, meaning it can withstand wind gusts up to 120 miles per hour - equal to an F2 tornado. Under high wind conditions metal roofing systems have wind resistance and uplift resistance that is above the new building code requirements. Naturally, this gives architects and engineers a sense of relief in that they can use the best material to meet those criteria. In locations that see heavy snow, metal roofing has been the choice of homeowners for years. It sheds snow fast, which protects the structural integrity of the roof. And it can eliminate ice damming at the eves, so water can't back up and collect under the roof then leak into your home. If you live in a part of the country that is prone to wildfires, metal roofing can protect your home should burning embers land on your roof. In fact, you should check with your insurance agent as its quite likely that the installation of metal roofing will save you money on your homeowners insurance.

Q. Is a metal roof environmentally responsible?

A. Not only is metal roofing great for your home, it's great for the environment. The recycled content of the steel in a metal roof is about 56% from production to installation to reuse - far superior to asphalt. According to the National Association of Homebuilders Research Center, 20 billion pounds of asphalt shingles are dumped into U.S. landfills every year. If you loaded those shingles into tractor trailers, then lined them up end-to-end, they would make a line from New York City to Los Angeles, back to New York City again, then on to Chicago. That's a lot of wasted asphalt. But because a metal roof can often be installed over your current roof, without tearing off what's already there, metal roofing helps to reduce this excessive shingle waste.

Q. Would a metal roof be too heavy for certain types of homes, or for smaller structures like a detached garage or porch?

A. You'll be surprised to learn that a metal roof is, on average, 50% lighter than an asphalt shingle roof, and 75% lighter than concrete tile, fiber cement shakes and slate. With metal roofing, weight on a structure is never an issue.

Q. Can I add insulation under the metal panels?
